When should you see and endocrinologist?

  • If she has irregular periods, excessive bleeding.
  • She has acne, excessive facial hair, hair loss, baldness.
  • Is she gaining weight, obese, acanthosis nigricans.

It is difficult to diagnose PCOS in adolescent girls, as normal adolescent girls can also have the same symptoms as PCOS due immature hormonal axis.

What will your endocrinologist do?

The endocrinologist will take a detailed history, examine your daughter, order blood test and then decide if she really has PCOS or not.

Can it be treated?

PCOS can be managed well with medications, without affecting her future reproductive cycle or any difficulty in pregnancy.
